References from Rehearsal Today (22 April)

LEAR setting:
Beginnin
g in 1780s and journeying to "Beckett-land" by the end.

I have a book about 18th century England which will be here on Tuesday.

We need to see 26 puddles of water.
Film where the little boy pees himself at school with the dad:Padre Padron.

People crapping themselves going to meet Stalin.

Ideas behind LEAR:
Idea of chaos surrounding an event. An crisis first being political brings about social crises, familial crises, and crises within the individual human being.

Material changes in character.

Start with a civilized and formal society and the crisis allows changes to manifest and alter the world.

Dangers of fascism and absolute power. Lear dominates and controls many of the character's lives.

Parallels drawn with absolute power...(some mentioned in the room, others not).
Hitler
Nicaragua

INTENSE meeting of the house of commons: lots of shouting and calling back. This will be most useful for GEORGE as well.

Extended discussion of language and prosody. I won't post the details, but if anyone is looking for something specific, I have my notes. But a breif overview:
LANGUAGE: TO EMPOWER THE ACTOR
1. APPOSITION/COUNTERPOINT
2. METAPHOR
3. RHYTHM
4. FULL STOPS & LINE ENDINGS

Relish the language: the sounds and tastes.
